Essential Ingredients for Successful Small Business Marketing

small business marketing

1. Get noticed

2. Deliver a benefit driven message that creates the deisre to act

It really doesn’t matter what your message is if nobody notices it. And by the other side of the coin it really doesn’t matter how many people see / hear your message if it doesn’t create the desire for them to act.

Each aspect of your marketing campaign should have a specific outcome defined. You don’t necessarily need to go for the sale in every marketing piece. Creating a desire to act can be as simple as creating a desire to call you on the telephone or walk into your shop.

Marketing step by step.

Most of your advertisements will have limited space so you’ll probably find it easier to create the desire to call or visit you rather than trying to sell the end product. If you know that one in 10 people who call or walk in to your business will make a purchase then it makes sense that if you double the number of enquiries that you will double the number of sales.

A Simple Low-Cost Marketing Strategy

Do you have a shop front? If so try putting a sign out the front the following words and see what it does to your walk-ins.

Come in and see our xxxx. It’s an incredible xxxx at an unbelievable price.

Of course for this to work your sign needs to stand out and get noticed.

I gave this concept to a café with an extremely small marketing budget. They hand made the sign in bright bold colours with tinsel trimming and place it prominently outside their café.

The words they used – Come in and try our famous beef burger. It’s an incredibly great tasting burger at an unbelievable price.

Their sales increased by 20% as a result of that sign.

Simple, Low-Cost Marketing Strategy. Excellent Results!

How Much Should Small Businesses Spend on Marketing?

Low Cost Marketing

Small business owners often ask me how much they should be spending on advertising and marketing.

The answer is… it depends.

It depends on how effective their marketing is and their capacity to service new clients.

Marketing should not be an expense is should be an investment.

I recommend all businesses track the return of every dollar they spend on marketing because if you know that you generate $10,000 in profit for every $1000 you invest then it makes sense to spend as much as necessary to generate the sales that put you at full capacity. Even if you only generated $2000 in profit for every $1000 you spend on marketing then you are doubling your money each time.

At the same time if you can reduce the costs of your ads and produce the same results then why wouldn’t you?

There is no easy formula that tells you to spend 20% of all revenue on marketing because every industry is different and every business within each industry is different.

In small business you need to be smarter. You need to balance your marketing dollars between branding campaigns that build profits over the long term with direct marketing campaigns that bring immediate profits.

If you are unsure about how much to spend on marketing and advertising then chances are that your marketing campaigns are not as effective as they could be.

Before you go throwing more money in advertising and marketing I recommend you sit down with an experienced marketing consultant to see if you can improve the effectiveness of your marketing material.

Joint Venture MarketingJoint Venture Marketing

Joint Venture Marketing is one of our favourite marketing strategies for small business.

I've yet to meet a small business owner who wouldn't benefit from including joint venture marketing into their marketing mix.

The two main reasons we love JV marketing for small business is because it costs a heck of a lot less than traditional marketing methods and most importantly it works!

JV marketing lets you tap straight into the right customer demographic for your business.

In fact their are so many benefits for small business that I couldn't possibly list them all here.

Deb has written a fantastic manual that takes you through the exact process we use to set up JV's you can read more about it by clicking here.
